How to crochet the Waffle Stitch

  1. 1Make a starting chain in a multiple of 3 plus 2, then work 1 double crochet in the third chain from the hook and in each chain across. This is your base row.
  2. 2Row 2: chain 2 and turn, then work 1 double crochet in the first stitch.
  3. 3Front post double crochet (fpdc) around the next 2 stitches: yarn over, insert the hook from front to back to front around the post of the stitch below, and complete a double crochet.
  4. 4Work 1 double crochet in the next stitch.
  5. 5Repeat the [2 fpdc, 1 dc] pattern across the row, ending with a dc.
  6. 6Repeat Row 2 for the fabric. The post stitches stack into vertical ridges while the plain dc columns sink between them to form the waffle grid.

Tips

  • Keep the front post stitches a little loose, since the fabric is dense and pulls in.
  • The waffle uses noticeably more yarn than plain double crochet, so buy extra.
  • Cotton yarn shows the grid crisply and makes great waffle dishcloths.
