How to crochet the Double Crochet

  1. 1Yarn over (wrap working yarn over hook) before inserting the hook.
  2. 2Insert your hook into the next stitch.
  3. 3Yarn over and pull through the stitch. You now have three loops on your hook.
  4. 4Yarn over and pull through the first two loops only. Two loops remain on the hook.
  5. 5Yarn over and pull through the remaining two loops.
  6. 6One double crochet is complete. One loop remains on the hook.

Tips

  • Use a turning chain of 3. Many patterns count this chain as the first double crochet of the row; confirm with your pattern.
  • Double crochet produces a looser, more drapey fabric. Go down one hook size if the fabric looks too open for your project.
  • In UK terms, this stitch is called a treble crochet (tr). Always check which standard a pattern uses before starting.
