Click or tap to place. Hold and drag to fill multiple. Your chart saves to your browser automatically.
How to use it
- Choose your grid size with the − and + buttons. Width (w) is columns, height (h) is rows. The grid grows or shrinks from the bottom-right corner so your top-left stays put.
- Pick a stitch from the palette and a color. Click or tap a cell to place the symbol. Hold and drag to fill many cells in one motion.
- Tap Erase to switch into eraser mode, then click cells to clear them. Tap a stitch or color to switch back to paint mode.
- When you are done, hit Export PNG. The file downloads with row and column numbers labeled on the side, ready to print or share.
How crochet and knit charts read
Crochet charts are read from the bottom-right corner upward and to the left, the same direction you actually work the stitches. Knit charts also read bottom-up, but on right-side rows you read right to left, and on wrong-side rows you read left to right. Our exported PNG labels rows from the bottom up and columns from the right side, so the chart is ready to follow.
If you are new to reading charts at all, the crochet introduction walks through the four foundation stitches and the basics of pattern shorthand.
Privacy and saving
Your chart saves to your browser using local storage. We never send it anywhere, and we have no account system to lose. If you clear your browser data, your chart goes with it. Export a PNG when you have a version you want to keep.
Frequently asked questions
Is the stitch chart maker actually free?
Yes. No signup, no email, no paywall, no watermark on the exported PNG. The chart you make is yours, and it saves to your browser between sessions so you can pick up where you left off.
Is this an alternative to Stitch Fiddle?
It covers the same use case. Stitch Fiddle is a well-loved tool with more features (filet, lace, knit cable libraries). Our chart maker is faster to open, has no account requirement, and ships with the CrochetZen colour palette built in. Use whichever fits your workflow.
What symbols does it support?
Six crochet symbols (chain, slip stitch, single crochet, half double crochet, double crochet, treble) and five knit symbols (knit, purl, yarn over, k2tog, ssk). That covers the foundation of almost every beginner and intermediate pattern.
Can I export to PDF instead of PNG?
Not yet. PNG is the simplest format that works everywhere (printers, social posts, pattern PDFs, Pinterest). If you need PDF, open the exported PNG in any browser and use the browser's print to PDF option, which preserves the original resolution.
Does it work on phones?
Yes. The grid responds to touch, with tap to place and drag to fill multiple cells. The grid scrolls horizontally on smaller screens so you can still build a large chart on a phone.
Will my chart sync between devices?
Not currently. The chart saves to your browser only, which means it stays on the device you made it on. Export a PNG and email it to yourself if you need to keep working on another machine.
