How to crochet the Half Double Crochet

  1. 1Yarn over (wrap working yarn over hook from back to front) before inserting the hook.
  2. 2Insert your hook into the next stitch.
  3. 3Yarn over and pull through the stitch. You now have three loops on your hook.
  4. 4Yarn over once more.
  5. 5Pull through all three loops on the hook in one motion.
  6. 6One half double crochet is complete. One loop remains on the hook.

Tips

  • Use a turning chain of 2 at the end of a row. Some patterns count it as a stitch and some do not, so check the instructions.
  • The extra loop (third loop) on the back of each hdc can be worked into for a ribbed effect. This technique is called hdc third loop ribbing.
  • Half double crochet is slightly warmer and loftier than single crochet with the same yarn, making it a good default for hats and cowls.
