Crochet Sweaters Patterns

Crochet sweaters range from boxy beginner pullovers to fitted designs, and forgive imperfect gauge more than most people expect.

A crochet sweater is a bigger commitment than a hat, but it is not the mountain beginners imagine. The most forgiving route is a top-down raglan worked in one piece, which lets you try it on as you go and adjust the length and sleeves to your body. A granny-square or hexagon sweater is even simpler to shape, since you make flat motifs and join them.

Plan for yarn and gauge. A worsted-weight adult pullover uses roughly 1,000 to 1,500 yards depending on size and length. Work a generous gauge swatch in your chosen stitch, because a small gauge error multiplies across a whole garment and turns a medium into a large.

Fit is the last piece. If a finished sweater rides up at the front or pulls across the chest, the issue is usually shaping rather than your stitches, and a few short rows over the bust solve it. The body of most sweaters is plain double or half double crochet, so the skill is in the construction, not the stitch.

Stitches you will use

  • Chain StitchUS: ch / UK: chThe chain stitch is the foundational crochet stitch that creates a series of interlocked loops used to start almost every pattern and to form turning chains at the start of a row.
  • Single CrochetUS: sc / UK: dcThe single crochet (sc) is the most basic crochet stitch, creating a short, dense fabric by inserting the hook, pulling up a loop, and drawing yarn through two loops.
  • Half Double CrochetUS: hdc / UK: htrThe half double crochet (hdc) is a medium-height stitch that produces a slightly taller, softer fabric than single crochet, with a characteristic third loop on the back that can be used for texture.
  • Double CrochetUS: dc / UK: trThe double crochet (dc) is the most widely used crochet stitch, producing an open, drapey fabric by working yarn over twice to create a stitch roughly twice the height of single crochet.
  • Granny StitchUS: 3-dc cluster / UK: 3-tr clusterThe granny stitch is the building block of the classic granny square, made from small clusters of three double crochets separated by chain spaces, worked here in straight rows.
