Crochet Scarves Patterns

Crochet scarves are ideal beginner projects: a long, straight rectangle that teaches gauge, stitch consistency, and tension.

A crochet scarf is the first rectangle most beginners make after practicing basic stitches. The shape is forgiving: an inch wider or narrower does not matter much, and you can make it as long or short as you like. A standard adult scarf runs 60 to 72 inches (152 to 183 cm) long and 6 to 8 inches (15 to 20 cm) wide, using roughly 200 to 400 yards of yarn depending on weight and stitch.

What makes scarves interesting beyond the basics is texture. The double crochet (dc) gives a loose, drapey fabric. The half-double crochet (hdc) is slightly denser and warmer. The moss stitch (alternating sc and chain stitches with offset rows) creates a grid-like texture that looks much more complex than it is. Ribbed scarves worked with front and back post double crochet have the stretchy, cozy feel of a knitted ribbed scarf.

Infinity scarves (worked in a continuous loop) are a good intermediate challenge. You work a long strip, join the ends, and then crochet a round of border to hide the seam. Cowls are similar but shorter and wider, and they usually sit closer to the neck. Both are practical in cold climates and use about 15 to 20 percent less yarn than a traditional drape scarf of the same width.

What you need

Yarn
Worsted (CYC 4) for a cozy, quick scarf. DK (CYC 3) for a lighter, drapier result.
Hook
5.0 to 5.5 mm for worsted; 4.0 to 4.5 mm for DK.
Skill
beginner, easy, intermediate

Stitches you will use

  • Single CrochetUS: sc / UK: dcThe single crochet (sc) is the most basic crochet stitch, creating a short, dense fabric by inserting the hook, pulling up a loop, and drawing yarn through two loops.
  • Double CrochetUS: dc / UK: trThe double crochet (dc) is the most widely used crochet stitch, producing an open, drapey fabric by working yarn over twice to create a stitch roughly twice the height of single crochet.
  • Half Double CrochetUS: hdc / UK: htrThe half double crochet (hdc) is a medium-height stitch that produces a slightly taller, softer fabric than single crochet, with a characteristic third loop on the back that can be used for texture.
  • Chain StitchUS: ch / UK: chThe chain stitch is the foundational crochet stitch that creates a series of interlocked loops used to start almost every pattern and to form turning chains at the start of a row.
