The classic granny square is built from chains, double crochets, and corner spaces, worked outward from a central ring. A traditional 4-round square measures about 5 to 6 inches (13 to 15 cm) across in worsted weight. You can make dozens of them separately, then join them into blankets, bags, cardigans, vests, and wall hangings. The modular approach means a project is never too large to carry around.
Modern granny squares go far beyond the classic. Solid squares (worked without corner spaces) produce a denser, less holey fabric. Flower-center squares start with a popcorn or bobble stitch at the middle and add petals in the second round. Overlay crochet squares use contrasting colors worked over earlier rounds to create geometric patterns. Hexagons, octagons, and irregular medallions all follow the same principle: work outward from center, adding stitches at regular intervals to keep the piece flat.
Joining is the skill that separates a pile of squares from a finished project. The join-as-you-go (JAYG) method attaches each square to its neighbors in the last round, so you have no sewing at the end. The flat slip-stitch join creates a subtle ridge on the right side. The flat single-crochet join creates a more visible seam that many crafters use as a design element by working it in a contrasting color.
What you need
- Yarn
- Any weight works. Worsted (CYC 4) is standard. Use your yarn scraps here.
- Hook
- 5.0 to 5.5 mm for worsted; match hook to yarn weight.
- Skill
- beginner, easy, intermediate, advanced
Stitches you will use
- Chain StitchUS: ch / UK: chThe chain stitch is the foundational crochet stitch that creates a series of interlocked loops used to start almost every pattern and to form turning chains at the start of a row.
- Slip StitchUS: sl st / UK: ssThe slip stitch is the shortest crochet stitch, used to join rounds, move yarn to a new position without adding height, and finish seams.
- Double CrochetUS: dc / UK: trThe double crochet (dc) is the most widely used crochet stitch, producing an open, drapey fabric by working yarn over twice to create a stitch roughly twice the height of single crochet.
- Shell StitchUS: sh / UK: shThe shell stitch is a fan-shaped crochet stitch made by working multiple double crochets into the same stitch or space, creating a repeating scallop pattern used in blankets, garments, and shawls.
