Crochet doilies are the lacework of the craft. Traditionally they are made in fine cotton thread, usually size 10, with a small steel hook around 1.5 to 1.75 mm, and worked in rounds from a center ring outward. Each round adds chain loops, shells, picots, and clusters that open into a symmetrical lace pattern. A classic thread doily measures 8 to 14 inches (20 to 36 cm) across and takes a few focused evenings.
You do not have to work in thread, though. The modern doily and the related mandala are often made in worsted weight cotton with a 4.0 to 5.0 mm hook, which works up far faster and reads as a bold table piece or wall hanging rather than fine lace. The construction is the same, only the scale changes.
Blocking is not optional for a doily. The lace looks crumpled and shapeless straight off the hook. Wet it, pin every point and loop out to its full shape on a foam board, and let it dry, sometimes with a little starch, so the pattern opens up crisp and flat.

Stitches you will use
- Chain StitchUS: ch / UK: chThe chain stitch is the foundational crochet stitch that creates a series of interlocked loops used to start almost every pattern and to form turning chains at the start of a row.
- Slip StitchUS: sl st / UK: ssThe slip stitch is the shortest crochet stitch, used to join rounds, move yarn to a new position without adding height, and finish seams.
- Double CrochetUS: dc / UK: trThe double crochet (dc) is the most widely used crochet stitch, producing an open, drapey fabric by working yarn over twice to create a stitch roughly twice the height of single crochet.
- Treble CrochetUS: tr / UK: dtrThe treble crochet (tr) is a tall stitch created by yarning over twice before inserting the hook, producing an open, lacy fabric about three times the height of single crochet.
- Shell StitchUS: sh / UK: shThe shell stitch is a fan-shaped crochet stitch made by working multiple double crochets into the same stitch or space, creating a repeating scallop pattern used in blankets, garments, and shawls.
- Cluster StitchUS: cl / UK: clThe cluster stitch joins several partly worked stitches together at the top, pulling a group of double crochets into a single point for a textured, gently decreasing effect.
