The dragon is the amigurumi people graduate to when they want a challenge with a payoff. It has more parts than most: an elongated body, a head with a snout, a tail, four legs, a pair of wings, and a row of spikes down the back. None of the pieces is hard on its own, but there are a lot of them, and the assembly is where a dragon comes alive.
A cute baby dragon keeps everything rounded and skips the harder detail, which makes a good first dragon. A more detailed dragon adds a contrasting belly worked in color changes, shaped wings, and a ridge of spikes sewn along the spine. Both rest on the same single crochet spheres and tubes as every other amigurumi.
What you need
- Yarn
- Amigurumi cotton or worsted (CYC 4) with a 3.0 mm hook, plus a contrast color for the belly and wings. About 150 yards.
- Skill
- Intermediate. The stitches are simple; the part count and assembly are what raise the difficulty.

- 3Two-tone dragon. A contrasting belly worked in color changes. Teaches color joins on a shaped body.
- 4Winged dragon. Larger shaped wings that hold their form. Teaches flat shaping and firm assembly.
