Worsted Weight Yarn

Worsted weight (CYC 4) is the most popular yarn weight for crochet and knitting, balancing speed, warmth, and ease of working for beginners and experts alike.

Worsted weight yarn sits in the middle of the standard yarn weight system. The Craft Yarn Council designates it as category 4, and it is the default assumption of most beginner patterns. In the UK, the closest equivalent is "aran" weight, though UK aran can run slightly heavier. You will find worsted at every craft store in the widest range of fibers and colors.

The recommended hook size for worsted is 5.0 to 6.5 mm (US sizes H/8 to K/10.5). Needle size for knitting is typically 4.0 to 5.5 mm (US 6 to 9). A standard gauge in double crochet runs about 12 to 15 stitches per 4 inches (10 cm). Yardage per 100-gram skein runs roughly 180 to 220 yards for wool-based yarns, and 190 to 210 yards for acrylic.

Care depends on fiber content: superwash wool is machine washable; non-superwash wool needs hand washing; acrylic and most cotton-acrylic blends are machine washable on cool. Check the label for the specific yarn you are using.
