Yarn weight guide

Super Bulky Yarn

Super bulky yarn (CYC 6) is a very thick weight that works up almost instantly, perfect for chunky blankets, cowls, and cold-weather accessories.

Super bulky is category 6, thicker than chunky and bulky, and it is the fastest standard yarn to work with. A cowl can be done in an hour and a throw in a day or two. The large stitches make it a confidence builder for beginners, since progress is immediate and mistakes are easy to see and fix.

Hooks run roughly 9.0 to 15.0 mm and needles 8.0 to 12.75 mm. Gauge is loose, around 5 to 9 stitches per 4 inches (10 cm). The fabric is warm and heavy, so it suits outerwear, cushions, and statement blankets more than fitted garments. For anything even thicker, jumbo yarn (category 7) and roving take the same idea further.
