Yarn weight guide

Sock Yarn

Sock yarn is a fine, hard-wearing yarn, usually a superwash wool and nylon blend in fingering weight, made to survive the friction of a sock and machine washing.

Sock yarn is defined by its job more than a single fiber. It is almost always a fingering weight (CYC 1), and the most common blend is about 75 percent superwash wool with 25 percent nylon. The wool gives warmth and stretch, the nylon adds the abrasion resistance a sock needs at the heel and toe, and the superwash treatment lets you machine wash the finished socks.

Hooks for sock yarn run 2.25 to 3.5 mm and needles 2.25 to 3.25 mm, since the yarn is thin and socks are worked at a tight gauge so they wear well. Sock yarn is not only for socks: its fine weight and long color runs make it popular for shawls, lightweight accessories, and detailed colorwork.
