DK Weight Yarn

DK weight (CYC 3, double knitting) is a light-medium yarn that produces finer fabric than worsted but works up faster than fingering, popular for garments and lightweight accessories.

DK stands for double knitting, a UK term that has become universal. The Craft Yarn Council classifies it as category 3, one step lighter than worsted. It produces a finer stitch definition and a softer drape, which is why garment knitters and crocheters reach for it when they want a less bulky sweater or a delicate shawl.

Recommended hook sizes for DK are 3.5 to 4.5 mm (US E/4 to G/7). Needle size for knitting is 3.75 to 4.5 mm (US 5 to 7). A typical gauge in double crochet is about 15 to 18 stitches per 4 inches (10 cm). Skeins usually contain 200 to 250 yards per 100 grams, giving you more yardage per skein than worsted.

DK is an excellent weight for amigurumi when you want a slightly larger figure than sport weight produces. It also works well for baby clothing because the resulting fabric is not too heavy and washes easily, particularly in cotton or bamboo-blend DK.
