Cotton yarn comes from the seed fibers of the cotton plant. Mercerized cotton has been treated with a sodium hydroxide solution that improves luster, strength, and dye uptake, giving the yarn a slightly shinier appearance and crisper stitch definition. Unmercerized cotton has a matte finish and slightly softer hand. Organic cotton is grown without synthetic pesticides and is certified to various organic standards.
Cotton has no elasticity. Stitches show every inconsistency, which is why many crafters find cotton less forgiving than wool or acrylic for their first projects. However, for items where stitch definition matters, such as textured dishcloths, structured bags, or lace doilies, that same lack of elasticity makes every stitch crisp and readable. Cotton also makes excellent summer garments because it is breathable and absorbs moisture.
Cotton yarn is typically DK (CYC 3) or worsted (CYC 4) weight for crochet projects. It is heavier per yard than wool or acrylic, so finished projects weigh more than you might expect. Care is easy: cotton is machine washable and can handle warmer wash temperatures than wool. Avoid high dryer heat, which can cause shrinkage.
